I have to say with my experience with IWD I & II, the game is more geared to the hack and slash style. You are fighting tougher and larger quantity of opponets, so needless to say, several fighters are a must with the IWD series. I orginally played the game with 6 characters, and I found it was still fun and leveling was moderate. However, If you want to game to be harder, but that recks XP out the anus, then just settle with the basic 4 classes: Fighter, Rouge, Mage/Socerer and Cleric.
With IWD II, planning for characters is a big must. What can be a good 5th level character can turn into a lame 20th level character, and vica versa. After playing the game in Core Rules mode, my characters reached 19-20 level. So as I said earlier, it would be wise to plan your characters ahead of time. With 3e the options available to your characters can be a bit daunting, but with a bit of planning, you can create solid characters that can endure almost anything that will be thrown at them.
